About
Extensive Courtroom Experience
I have practiced a wide variety of law at both the state and federal levels over the past 25 years.
In those 25 years, I have brought over one hundred cases to trial, including the successful litigation of three cases on appeal before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. I also represented youth in the Yellowstone County juvenile justice system for thirteen years.
In addition, I served as Regional Administrator for the Office of the Public Defender for seven and a half years, during which I litigated a number of high profile criminal cases in the Billings area. I consider the work of a public defender essential and I am honored to uphold each individual’s Constitutional right to legal representation, regardless of circumstance.
I earned my J.D. from The University of Montana School of Law in 1993, after which I worked as a law clerk in the Federal Court system and trained under Federal Judges Jack Shanstrom and Richard Anderson. Inspired by their work in the criminal justice system, I established Duke Law Firm in 1996 to support the Billings community.
On a Personal Level
Outside of work, I am an avid hiker, runner, and musician. I am a seven-time Montana State Chess Champion, with the large trophies in my office to prove it. Most importantly, I am the proud father of four wonderful children and grandpa to five adorable grandkids.
